Desert Landscaping Ideas

Surprise, Peoria & Goodyear Desert Landscaping

Living in a dry, arid climate presents its own set of unique challenges when it comes to landscaping, but that does not mean that it is impossible.  With a bit of mapping and premeditation, you can create an idyllic desert getaway that you can enjoy on even the coolest of days. Let the professionals at Arizona Rainfall help you with these landscaping tips that are sure to bring some life to your outdoor desert oasis.

Start with What You Have

Making improvements to your existing landscape is an effective way to create a whole new look without spending too much.  Start off by snapping photos of your front yard, your backyard, and any other areas you would like to landscape, and then ask yourself:

  • Which part of the yard needs improvement, and why?
  • Which part of the yard do I like the best and why does it appeal to me?
  • Could I improve the yard by making small adjustment to my landscaping?

Some trimming, weeding, and edging may be all your backyard needs to be brought back to life.  But by exploring your current backyard likes and dislikes, you will have greater insight into what you want from your backyard and how you are going to get it to where you want it to be.

Pick a Theme

All well-designed landscapes have a theme which incorporates a select number of similar plants.  This helps create flow and uniformity in your landscape.

Most landscaping professionals recommend that you choose one favorite tree, three favorite bushes, and one or two cacti to start off with.  Buy your plants in stages and plant them in different sections.  This will allow you to see how well they do during the hot and cold season and make changes as necessary.

Incorporate Additional Features

Once you have a theme in mind, start building from the bottom up.  You can begin to work in irrigation lines, if necessary, as well as hills, walk ways of stamped concrete or pavers, and river beds.  When you have these additional features mapped out, you can then begin to draw your theme plants into the design.

Plot out Your Plants

When planning where and what to plant, consider the following:

  • Where do you want shade?
  • Where do you want to prevent roots from growing?
  • What looks natural?

Don’t Forget the Finishing Touches

Rock features and other finishing touches will enhance the beauty and functionality of your yard.  Add boulders, potted plants, and furniture so that you can fully enjoy your desert oasis at any time of the year.
